Cat C and D write-off categories to be replaced

Cat C and D write-off categories are being replaced with all-new S and N write-off classes. The changes, which come into force on 1 October, will focus on structural damage rather than cost of repair and should make it easier for insurers to take dangerous vehicles off the road.

The categories will be changing from the old Category A, B, C and D. These will be replaced by:

A: Scrap
B: Break
S: Structurally damaged repairable
N: Non-structurally damaged repairable

The old categorisation meant that a structural damaged high value car would be repaired and put back on the road, whereas a lower value car with the same damage wouldn't be repaired. These revised codes should at least alert buyers of the seriousness of original damage.
